Controversies surrounding the “Golden hour”: are our practices around birth evidence based?

It is clear that many procedures that are carried out today in the delivery room as `routine` are not based on evidence. Despite the fact that some of these procedures may have immediate or life long detrimental effect on the infant and his/her family, we continue to practice them (administering 100% oxygen, routine suction, bicarbonate therapy). Whilst no firm conclusions can be drawn on the long term impact on the infants of maternal analgesia in the perinatal period, we now have clear evidence that cord clamping should be delayed for at least 30 seconds, routine suctioning of oropharynx of healthy and vigorous infants born through meconium should be abandoned whilst greater stress paid on maintaining infant`s glucose concentration.
