Anxiety and depression in patients and controls

Background: To find out prevalence of anxiety and depression in different age groups among patients in the medical and surgical wards and its, occurrence in normal control group. Methods: One hundred patients were collected randomly from medical and surgical wards. The control group also comprised 100 people not admitted in the wards and not suffering from any illness. All were interviewed. The demographic details comprising of various questions regarding the age, sex, education and marital status was also recorded. The questionnaire was translated in Urdu / Sindhi by a linguist and was filled in by the research group. Results: The prevalence of anxiety was 13% in the patients and 8% in the control group, whereas that of depression alone was 7% & 6% in the patients and control groups respectively. The presence of both anxiety and depression together was 15% in the patients and 5% in the normal control group. The over all incidence of mental problems was 35% in the patients and 19% in normal control group. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression are common in poor, in females, in the married and in patients having medical or surgical illness.
