Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate serum lipid profile in subjects having one or both parents with premature coronary heart disease (CHD) and compare the results of two groups. Study Design: A cross-sectional comparative study. Patients and Methods: 150 children having one parent and 100 children having both parents with diagnosed premature CHD were selected from Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore and Services Hospital, Lahore. 50 children without any parental history of CHD were also selected from various areas of Lahore. Serum total cholesterol (TC), serum triglycerides (TG), serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) estimation was performed. Results: Serum total cholesterol, Triglyceride and LDL-c of children with both parents having premature CHD were increased when compared with children having one parent with premature CHD. Serum HDL-c of all subjects` children having both parents with premature CHD was lower than all children having one parent with premature CHD. Serum TC, TG and LDL-c of children with no parental history of CHD was lower than children having parents with premature CHD. Conclusion: Children having both parents with premature CHD are more prone to develop lipid abnormalities as compared to children having one parent with premature CHD.
