Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) Survey of Smoking among Doctors

The use of tobacco causes enormous damage to the health and productivity of nations. It accounts for 3 million deaths annually, more than one million of them taking place in the developing countries. Most of the people in Pakistan including health professionals are unaware of the facts about smoking. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of doctors about cigarette smoking. Total respondents were 52 (45 males and 7 females) with a mean age of 32.9 years and mean service of 8.2 years. Eleven respondents Jail males) were smokers. Mean duration of smoking was 13 years. Average money spent on smoking per month per person was Rs. 700.00. Forty percent of the smokers started smoking due to their friends. Majority of the respondents knew the high risk group, the teenagers. Respondents had limited knowledge regarding smoking trends in developed and developing countries. It was observed that 50% of the doctors do not know about smokeless tobacco, 25% did not know about passive smoking. 98% of the respondents did not know the exact date of `No Tobacco Day` observed every year by World Health Organization.
