Guillain-Barré Syndrome after Hepatitis E virus infection: a case report
Infect Dis J Dec 2007;16(4):113-4.
Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory, predominantly demyelinating polyneuropathy. It is usually preceded by infection, immunization, surgery or trauma. Although there are many cases of GBS secondary to acute hepatitis such as hepatitis A, B, C, autoimmune hepatitis, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), few cases1-3 have been reported as a cause of this syndrome post hepatitis E virus infection. We report a 22 year-old man who presented with GBS ten days after jaundice and was found to have Anti HEV IgM positive. He was treated with Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG). The polyneuropathy resolved completely in a few weeks. We believe that GBS was triggered by hepatitis E that evoked inflammation and demyelination of the peripheral nerves.
