Causes of Goiter - a histological analysis

Five years data of thyroid enlargements was collected from Pathology Departments of Fatima Jinnah Medical College and King Edward Medical College, Lahore. A total of 487 cases were collected, 441 were females and 46 were males i.e., 9:1 ratio. The age ranged from 12 years to 76 years. The commonest lesion found was multinodular goiter i.e. 38.3%. Follicular adenoma was seen in 100 cases (20.3%). Amongst 51 cases of thyroiditis, lymphocytic thyroiditis was seen in 23 cases (45.1%), which was commoner than Hashimoto`s thyroiditis (27.4%). Papillary carcinoma was found to have higher incidence (57.14%) than follicular carcinoma (33.3%).
