Role of Colposcopy in clinically abnormal Cervix

A prospective study was conducted from 1st Jan to 31st May 1999 to evaluate naked eye cervical lesion on colposcopy. Fifty women were selected from gynaecological out patient department for this purpose. Inclusion criteria were symptomatic married women with naked eye cervical lesion. Asymptomatic women and women on exogenous hormones were not included in this study. Among the women studied colposcopically 25% had normal colposcopic findings while 14% showed atypical transformation zone. No patient in study group had suspicion of frank carcinoma. Patients placed in group 4 with miscellaneous findings were 54%. Incidence of abnormal cervical findings was related to increased parity and prime of reproductive life. It was concluded from the study that colposcopy is not only important in evaluation and management of pre-clinical stages of cervical neoplasia but also important in the diagnosis of other lesions of lower genital and these simple lesions can be treated more accurately and confidently after colposcopy.
