Correlation of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus with risk factors

This study is designed to find the hospital-based prevalence of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in relation to age, parity and risk factors. 400 pregnant females with gestational age of 24 weeks or more attending antenatal clinics of Jinnah Hospital Lahore were included in the study. 27 (6.7%) out of these 400 pregnant females had value of 155 mg/dl or more after 01-hour, when were subjected to 50 gm Glucose Challenge Test (GCT). They were correlated with parity and risk factors like family history of diabetes mellitus and obesity. The risk factors such as overweight (12.29% vs 2.26%), family history of diabetes mellitus (17.55% vs 1.48%) and parity (8.73% vs 3.37%) were strongly associated with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. It is concluded that Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is more prevalent in females who are overweight, multipara and have family history of diabetes mellitus.
