Services Hospital, Lahore
Aim: To assess the prevalence of acanthosis nigricans (a cutaneous marker) in polycystic ovarian disease in Pakistani population. Methods: 50 female patients of fertile age with polycystic ovaries were selected at random, visiting gynaecology outpatient department for the treatment of infertility/menstrual irregularity. Results: 35 patients (70%) were found to have cutaneous marker of acanthosis nigricans. (total area and the sum of the severity of the AN lesion were charted as “Acanthosis Nigricans Index” –ANI). The correlation was found to be significant between acanthosis nigricans index and total cystic area. The coefficient correlation “r” was 0.902 while probability of prevalence “p” was <0.001. The relationship between acanthosis nigricans index and total cystic area was also accessed. According to the results the mean total cystic area was 86.69mm (SD 14.046) in patients having acanthosis nigricans. Conclusion: A significant relationship was found to exist between acanthosis nigricans index and total cystic area i.e. p<0.001 which shows a positive prevalence of acanthosis nigricans in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
