Management of Colonic Trauma: An experience at Mayo Hospital, Lahore

Study of 57 patients with colonic injuries was conducted at West Surgical Unit of Mayo Hospital, Lahore from January 94 to December 96 with the aim to compare the results of primary repair of colonic injuries versus delayed repair and exteriorization. Majority of patients were male and major cause of injury was firearm followed by stab and blunt trauma to the abdomen. Primary repair was done in 24 cases (42.10%) followed by loop colostomy with primary repair in 10 cases (17.54%) and exteriorization in 8 cases (14.03%). Overall mortality was 7.01%. This study signifies that evaluation and management of colon injuries have recently undergone significant changes.
