Comparison of changes in Contrast Sensitivity Function and Visual Acuity in children undergoing treatment for Amblyopia Therapy

This prospective study was conducted in the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus unit of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi from January 1998 to April 1999. All patients are first examined in the outpatient department. A doctor in the outpatient department carried out a detailed ophthalmic examination. Study population consisted of 20 normal subjects and 40 amblyopic children with age of 5-7 years and followed for a minimum of 6 months. The amblyopic & strabismic patients who fulfilled the criteria were included in the study. Patients included in the study were referred to orthoptics clinic, where a trained optometrist examined the patients. A complete present and past history of every patient was taken. Visual acuity of every patient was checked and recorded separately both for near and distance, with and without glasses, with standard snellen acuity chart of Cambridge crowding cards and with pinhole. Contrast sensitivity function was checked by two different methods: Cambridge low contrast gratings procedure, Pelli Robson contrast sensitivity chart procedure; Amblyopia therapy regimen.
