Spinal Injuries: A Prospective Study

One hundred and fifty six patients over the age of 20 years (113 males and 43 females) suffering from serious Thoracic Spinal Injury were admitted in the Department of Neurosurgery over 3 years. Sevent nine percent patients were between 20-30 years. The Causative factors included 'Road traffic accidents' 60%, fall from tree or height 40%. Thirty percent patients had isolated spinal injury while 70% patients had multiple system involvement, head and limb or abdominal injuries. Thirty three percent patients had some contusion or laceration over the area of injury. Partial neurological loss, progressive worsening, severe pain and wound at fracture site were the indications of surgery. Mortality was 12% and mainly due to chest problem, few patients died during follow up and had wide bedsores and leg edema. Only 20% patients could be discharged during 10 days while admission period was variable and upto 2-4 weeks.

Nice work.Aetiology varies geographically .Mortality rate is quite high may be due to associated injuires. Neurophysiological instability can take about six weeks to recover.In case of incomplete spinal cord injuries it may be reasonable to keep patients on bed rest for six weeks or do Tilt table study before mobilisation
