Etiology and clinical profile of UTI in children

A cross-sectional study was conducted at Department of Child Health, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar to review the clinical presentation of UTI, to determine the bacterial spectrum and antibiotic sensitivity. Children aged 1 month - 12 years with signs / symptoms suggestive of UTI were investigated by urine culture / sensitivity test. 54 confirmed cases with a colony count of >10e5/ml were included in the study. Common symptoms included fever (54%), failure to thrive (35%), vomiting (35%) and loose motions (30%), commonest sign was anemia (39%). Commonest pathogens found were E.Coli (57%), Citrobacter (17%), Proteus (11%). Maximum sensitivity was noted against Amikacin, Gentamycin, Cefotaxime & Co-amoxiclav.
