Bleeding Per Rectum in Children

Introduction: Bleeding per rectum is a common presenting complaint in children in paediatric as well as in surgical out patient departments. Any bleeding from the rectum should be completely investigated by a complete history and thorough physical examination. Any further investigation for confirmation of diagnosis or at times for treatment like rectosigmoidoscopy is a major and difficult undertaking in children especially with distressed and terrified parents. Bleeding from the rectum may be a symptom of serious underlying disease. The present study gives an aetiological breakup of bleeding per rectum in 100 cases below the age of 15 years. Study: An aetiological breakup of bleeding per rectum in 100 consecutive cases (below 15 years of age) presenting with this complaint is discussed. Amongst the common causes were: necrotizing enterocolitis, bacillary dysentery, rectal polypi, intussusseption, ulcerative colitis, amoebic dysentery and aplastic anaemia. Some other causes were: snake bite, anal fissure, cow's milk allergy, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, etc.
