Intestinal Tuberculosis as an abdominal emergency

A prospective study is presented in which 71 laparotomies were performed from January 1999 to February 2000 at Surgical Emergency in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore and Services Hospital Lahore. Out of these 24 (34%) proved to he abdominal TB, including 17 (71%) male and 7 (29%) females. The age ranges from 14-55 years (with mean age: 29 years). Seven (29%) cases were having associated pulmonary TB. The main symptom 22 (92%) were abdominal pain and distension with most commonly 68 (75%) involved region being the distal ileum with two cases (8%) having associated pathology of typhoid and 1 (4%) that of amaebiasis. Right hemicolectomy was performed in 6 (25%), ileostomy in 3 (12%), sticturoplasty in 3 (4%), adhesolysis in 7 (29%) and perforation repair in 2 (8%). In 3 (12%) cases opening and closing with biopsy was performed. Two of the patients (8%) died during follow up. Abdominal tuberculosis is becoming a major surgical emergency in our set up and measures should be taken to improve the living standards and literacy rates along with teaching and training of family physician to minimize the predisposing factors responsible for the resurgence of tuberculosis in our country.
