Screening for newer defects in well recognised ophthalmic syndromes with special description of Goldenhar`s Syndrome

A study was carried out to establish the occurrence of new findings in well-recognized ophthalmic syndromes in children. The study lasted for six months from March 1989 to August 1989. Children with findings in external eye structures or ocular adenexa were the only ones included in the study. A total of nine children were recruited in the study. It was found that five children had ptosis, two had lid colobomas, one had nasolacrimal fistula and one had Goldenhar`s syndrome. There were two additional findings in the child with Goldenhar`s syndrome that had never been reported before. These were presence of skin tags on the tip of the nose and presence of a deep sinus in the nasolabial fold. This meant that the chances of detecting new findings were about 11%.
