Pak Postgrad Med J Dec 2001;12(4):173-6.
Services Hospital, Lahore
Skin defects of the planter surface of heel pose a difficult problem for the Reconstructive Surgeon and need a surgical expertise. In the absence of subcutaneous tissue, split thickness skin grafts tend to break down under the influence of pressure and constant shearing forces while distant flaps tend to be bulky and lack sensation. Eleven cases of such skin defects in the heel were resurfaced with medial planter artery vascular pedicled-islanded flap and the results were found to be excellent. Conservation of sensitivity offers protective advantage.
