Head Injury: One-year experience at Services Hospital, Lahore

A retrospective study regarding incidence and etiology was conducted on head injury patients admitted during the year 1998-99. There were total 400 head injury patients of all degrees of severity. There were 302 (75%) males and 98 (25%) females. Male to Female ratio was 3:1. The age ranged from a few months to 80 years. The highest incidence of head injury was in the age group ranging from 0-10 years, i.e.; 111 (27%) patients, followed by patients aged 21-30 years i.e.; 96 (24%). The main cause of head injury in all age groups was road traffic accident (RTA), 66%, except in 0-10 years where it was replaced by falls, 67%. The other causes i.e.; assaults, firearm injuries were responsible in G%. The associated injuries were present in 24% patients and mainly long bones were involved.
