Evaluation of effects of Calcium Channel Blocker, Verapamil on the volume and acidity of basal and Carbachol induced gastric secretion

This study was conducted to observe the effects of calcium channel blocker Verapamil on volume and acidity of basal and carbachol stimulated gastric secretion. Twenty four albino rats of Sprague Dawley strain were used in the study. The animals were divided into four groups. The drugs were administered intraperitioneally and the effects of verapamil were evaluated on basal and carbachol stimulated gastric secretion. It was observed that the inhibition of basal and carbachol stimulated gastric secretion were evaluated. It was observed that inhibition of basal free acidity and total acidity by verapamil was highly significant( P<0.001) but reduction in volume was nonsignificant. It was also observed that there was highly significant reduction in volume, free and total acidity in carbachol induced gastric secrection (P<0.001). It is concluded that verapamil is an excellent inhibitor of gastric secretion and may be quite effectively used in patients of peptic ulcer or peptic ulcer associated with other diseases which need calcium channel blockers for their treatment.
