Penetrating neck trauma caused by an unusual weapon

Penetrating injuries of the neck are apart of modern life. These injuries are commonly seen in the younger generation and there is a marked preponderance to males. Different kinds of weapons have been reported in literature, which have been used to inflict these injuries. We present a case of a penetrating neck injury, which was caused by a plastic ballpoint pen, and this plastic weapon was retained within the wound, on presentation in the accident and emergency department. A literature search in the English language has not revealed a similar case in which the weapon was a ballpoint pen.
