Lahore General Hospital, Lahore
This study was conducted in Surgical Unit II of Lahore General Hospital, Lahore from January 1999 to December 2002, to evaluate the spectrum of surgical procedures performed as day case, their complications and the impact of day case surgery in the overall patient management. A total of 1376 patients had undergone planned day case surgery during this period. Surgery was carried out under local anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Excision of skin and subcutaneous lumps was the commonest group of procedure performed (30.63%), followed by surgery on inguino- scrotal region (27.10%). Thirty three patients (2.39%) developed complications; wound infection being the commonest (1.3%). The rate of unplanned hospitalization was 1.38%. It is concluded that a significant number of elective operations can be performed as day case to reduce the hospital stay, the load on indoor facilities as well as major elective lists. It is safe and effective method of delivering surgical care with minimal complication rate and unplanned hospitalization rates.
