Mother & Child Mar 2000;38(1):4-8.
Fatimid Foundation, Lahore

Serum calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc was determined in thalassemic children belonging to 3 age groups i.e. up to 5 years, 5-10 years and above 10 years. Results indicated that children of either gender receiving desferrioxamine had signifantly (p<0.05) lower serum zinc as compared with children not receiving desferrioxamine, irrespective of desferrioxamine administration serum zinc was low and copper was high in thalassemic children. Calcium was close to lower limit of normal values reported in literature. Serum magnesium appeared normal. Age grouping and gender differentiation had no significant effect on the serum concentration of various trace minerals studied.
