J Surg Jun 2004;27(1):56-9.
Pakistan Institute Medical Sciences, Islamabad

Objective: Prevalence of prostatic lesions and to grade prostatic carcinomas according to Gleason`s grading system. Method: Retrospective analysis of prostatic lesions diagnosed between July 2002 and October 2004. Setting: The histopathology section of Pathology department, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. Observation: A total number of 146 prostate specimens were received. During the study period cases of nodular hyperplasia were 100 (68.5%), adenocarcinoma 20 (13.7%), proslatitis 13 (9%), No malignant cells 7 (4.8%), Prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia 3 (2%) and Atypical cells in 3 (2%) specimens. There were 4 types of specimen`s i.e. transurethral resection, Suprapubic prostectomy, true cut needle biopsy and fine needle aspiration. The mean age was 68 years. The majority of adenocarcinoma were poorly differentiated (Gleason`s scores 8, 9, 10). Conclusion: The large majority 70% of adenocarcinoma prostate in our study were poorly differentiated according to Gleason`s grading. This shows that most carcinomas were aggressive and have correlation with mortality. The measures should be taken for early diagnosis of lesion.
