Fluoxetine - Use in Pregnancy

Treatment of depression during pregnancy requires special care, mainly due to possible side effects associated with antidepressants. Fluoxetine is a widely used serotonin reuptake inhibitor effective in treatment of depression. The present study included 10 severely depressed women diagnosed by DSM-III-R, who were unwilling to accept ECT and were treated with Fluoxetine starting during the (first month of pregnancy through to 3 months after delivery. No significant adverse effects were seen during pregnancy. In addition, no adverse outcome was observed in relation to premature birth or miscarriage and no malformations were seen in infants.
