Zinc is the 23rd most abundant element in the earth`s crust. Use of zinc ranges from metal products to rubber and medicines. It is also a necessary element for proper growth and development of humans, animals, and plants. It is the second most common trace metal, after iron, naturally found in the human body. Not much is written about this essential element. This article reviews the physio-chemical characteristics, dietary sources, recommended daily allowances, deficiency states and therapeutic roles in clinical medicine. This also includes zinc-drug interactions and systemic toxicity due to its overuse. This is a review article.
