An Epidemiological Study Of 202 Cases of Oral Cavity Cancer (OCC) in Pakistani Subjects

The oral cavity cancer is one of the commonest cancer in Pakistan. An epidemiological study of 200 cases of oral cavity cancer was carried out. The patients were investigated and treated in The Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Mayo Hospital Lahore, Pakistan, in collaboration with Pakistan Medical Research Centre, King Edward Medical College / Mayo Hospital and Pathology Department K.E.M College, Lahore. The incidence of oral cavity cancer was found high in Pakistani subjects, 75% in the 4th-6th decades of their age group as compared with the studies performed internationally where the oral cavity cancer was found to be prevalent in the individuals within 4th-5th decade of their life. There was a female predominance with a ratio of 1.5:1. More than 90% of the cases were from middle and lower socioeconomic group, usually from rural areas. The Huqqa and Cigerette smokers revealed highest frequency of oral cavity cancer (22.8%) followed by pan, tobbaco and niswar chewers. Tongue involvement was found in 57% of the cases followed by cheeks and others (23%). More than 70% cases reported with advanced stages III and IV of the disease.
