The diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis can be difficult, with clinical signs and symptoms leading to a correct diagnosis in only approximately half the cases. In this study role of ultrasound (us) in diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis was assessed by comparing its findings with those of plain radiographs and antroscopy / washouts in 50 maxillary antra (25 patients). All these patients had clinically suspected maxillary sinusitis. Ultrasound showed 100% concordance with plain radiographs reported as normal, of these 91% showed no disease on antroscopy / washout. All the xrays showing air-fluid level or opacification (only reliable plain film indicators of an inflammed antrum) also showed abnormal ultrasound, and disease on antroscopy / washouts (in 85.7%). We conclude that ultrasound can be used as an initial investigation for maxillary sinusitis.
