Diagnosis and Management of Ectopic Pregnancy

A total of 34 patients were admitted for tubal pregnancy between Jan. 1996 and Dec. 1997. Majority of these women were multipara between 20-30 years of age. The usual presentation seen was pain lower abdomen, followed by vaginal bleeding and symptoms of shock. Ultrasound of the abdomen was useful for preoperative diagnosis for unruptured ectopic. Although laproscopic conservative surgery is a preferred procedure, laporotomy had to be performed for various reasons. Salpingectomy was carried out in 26 patients. Tube could be saved frequent in only 8 patients. Ectopic pregnancy is commonly a serious condition and a frequent cause of maternal death in the first trimester of pregnancy.
