Care Pathways are plans that detail the essential steps in the care of patients with a specific problem, stating the tasks to be carried out with the timing and the sequence and describe the expected clinical course based on best clinical evidence. They also record the variance from the agreed protocol and thus facilitate audit and integration of changes emanating from the audit. The current trend is to develop and extend the care pathways to primary care and community settings. Patient held care pathways are also being discussed. This paper provides an ambulatory care pathway for depression.
