Headache disorders in family practice

Headache syndromes are extremely common disorders with a lifetime prevalence approaching 90-95%. The great majority of headaches are biologically benign and feasible to manage in the family practice setting. Clinical evaluation aims to classify the headache syndrome, exclude warning signs suggestive of focal intracranial pathology, and implement rational therapy. Abortive and prophylactic pharmacologic agents are the cornerstones of treatment. Mitigating factors of stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression must be concurrently addressed. Non-pharmacologic options such as biofeedback, relaxation therapy and massage are also available but of unproven efficacy.
