Objective: With the ever-expanding nature of medical knowledge it is important for physicians to develop continuing medical education (CME) plans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the number of general practitioners who had attended CME and their reasons for attendance or non-attendance. Methods: A postal survey of 400 general practitioners was done Results: Only 35 out of 400 general practitioners replied of whom 20 had never attended a CME program. The most commonly cited reason for non-attendance was lack of information while nine (26%) stated that time constraints and inappropriate timings of continuing education activities were a deterrent to attendance. Physicians who had graduated less than 10 years ago were less likely to have attended a continuing medical education programme as compared to those who had graduated more than 10 years ago. Conclusions: There is a need to develop continuing education programmes that are feasible and allow for flexibility of time and to encourage practitioners to seek continuing medical education.
