At least one third to half of stroke patients are suspected to be affected with major depressive disorders. This review explores the mechanisms of comorbidity from an interdisciplinary perspective. There are conceptual issues related to comorbidity of depression and stroke, which influence diagnosis, assessment and management. A conceptual model of causality is developed for prospective inter-disciplinary research. This is a review article.
