First do research and then you will be able to publish research paper.To do research you must learn how to do it. And to learn it you must do it and to do it you must start doing it. And START IT NOW. Search about research and how to do it on NET. Select a topic. Get help and advise from some one who has done it and you will be able to learn how to do research and how to write paper based on your work. If you want and need I can advise as and when required. The TOPIC I will suggest should be "the problems you face as medical student in training and learning in your institution in particular and in the country in general.START IT NOW>

This is how it works in Pakistan. The people who edit the magazines will NEVER publish ur stuff unless u have someone backing u...someone to call them n say publish this paper..I authored a drug trial in the last issue of PJGastro and thats how it works..find a professor or an associate who likes reasearch...or just join the medical research community on orkut..i'll find u a topic i have many which i cant or dont wanna work on...btw..why spend so much money?just go buy Park's text book of preventive med..thats part of community med...it has much of the info u will need..

It is heartening to see student interest in research. I will suggest that you start from the education point of view. What sort of educational experience you are getting in medical schools? what do you feel about assessment.
Second try to flip through bmj student section. I recently read one article from a med student which was results of a research she did even before entering medical college. It is in the current issue of PJMS.
Another was a letter in JCPSP earlier issue from AKU students.
JPMA also has student section as far as I remember.
Finally if any more students are interested in initiationg research do send me message through www.pern.edu.pk. we have a communty of interest for health professions educator and the whole idea is to initiate mentored research. The other option may be to register at www.edna.edu.au and let me know again. There is a group again to initiate collaborative research between australia and other countries.

a word from amature
I was going thru this disscussion and I found it very intersting and it made me conveince that our students are intersted in research.
Actually this world has so much influence us that every one just want to have some research going on or stated in hisherCv which make him/her more advance.
Let me clear some thing for undergraduate and fresh medical students..
for going on indulging in a research you should know what it is and how it can be helpful in your future or how you can benefit it.. career wise as well as orientation wise.
I also publish 3 undergraduate publication in my 4th and 5th year .. if you ask me how to procede thru it..
i'll say that NTARIQ wrote a very goodthing.. you should join some ongoing research you should know what going on..
but some student cannot find this ..
illsuggest that before indulging in research.. start searching for a research question.. start finding it out..explore medline.. search index....how much you search its how many research question you will get in your mind.. for beigners i suggest that yyou go for REVEIW article..
REVEIW article is basically an article where you select a topic and review all article published in last 2-3 years in good journels and review it.. in thsi way you willdevelop

c)editing skill
and much more.

select a top.. get on to search engine get related article and start writing in thsi way you will know how research work..how the paper is written..once you go thru 100 reasearch article you will know what analytical study was used..
bit of technical but.. technicality is to be understood.. go from the bottom and start climbing your stairs..

It is comforting that a 3rd yr med student has started thinking about research. Doing research is to trying to find out the answers to questions that arise while you make decisions for the patients. This can be broadly divided into clinical: that tries to answers some of these questions:what is the characteristics of the patients meaning how they are presenting, so you will be able to diagnose them, what are possible causes such as reservoirs for infectious diseases, etc etc., what investigations are helpful and what treatments have been used and are they effective. Bench research or lab research is when you try to reproduce human diseases in animals and find the cause and its treatment. You could look at genes, organisms, cells, molecules etc etc.
In pakistan bench research for you will be difficult as finding certain lab etc and a mentor is probably not possible. Clinical researsh has tremendous opportunities. As a start since you are a 3rd year student and going to pathology, pahrmacology, forensic etc. looking at simple things as positive blood cultures out of so many and what were the organisms, similarly stool for ova & parasites, positive sputum cultures for TB and its sensitivities etc etc.
You do not have to do this but this is a general idea about the type of research you can do as a start. Joining a mentor who is already doing research will be a great help. Better starting point is to help an ongoing research, as collecting data for them, recording, making notes arranging things etc etc. This gives you an inside view of what is going on in true research since there are many difficulties one may face related to patients, labs, medications, administration problems etc.
The best thing is that you are looking for it. I would encourage you to read the journals at this site so many published from Pakistan, and you can have an idea by doing so.
