I worked in a dialysis unit in Karachi and noticed that most patients were compliant. They rarely m,issed their dialysis sessions. But that was a private dialysis centre.

Re: Why people don’t come for dialysis often

There could be several reasons as to why people don’t come for dialysis often. The major reason in Pakistan is lack of knowledge and awareness of how important a dialysis is. The other reason is the finances. Dialysis is very expensive and most people cannot afford it. Most hospitals across Pakistan aren’t equipped with the facility to give dialysis to patients.

Re: why people donot come for dialysis on regular basis

I think you have to educate dialysis patients that if they will not come in time for dialysis, then it will be dangerous for their lives. Secondly, staff should have patient's phone numbers to remind them for dialysis operation. So, they may never miss their operation.

Re: why people donot come for dialysis on regular basis

our friends from Multan, Bahawalpur,Rahimyar Khan, Sukkur and Sahiwal provided info. Out of 295 ESRD patients, 39 were non-compliant (missed atleast 2 dialysis in last month). The reason they quoted were:
1. Cost of transport: 18
2. Behaviour of staff: 7
3. Non-availability of attendent to bring: 7
4. Living at farflung area: 5
5. complications during dialysis: 2
we hope some one will do a large and properly designed study on this issue.

Many of my doctor colleagues complaint that ESRD patients donot come on time for dialysis. Many of these patients miss one, two or even more dialysis sessions and then come to dialysis or emergency in fluid overload or with uremia/metabolic acidosis. keeping this in mind, we conducted a survey in dialysis centers. This is not a scientific study and information is haphazard. Thats why we didnot publish it in medical journal. Cont....
