effect of space travelling on germs
Salmonella strain was send into space to check the effect of changed environment on growth and infection abality of the these microbes.
these microbes are well know for cause of food poisoning and result in Gastrointestinal problems.
when brought back form space and check their infection abality, it was dramtic observation that these microbes were 3 times more lethal for mice then the bacteria that stayed on earth.
so space travelling of salmonella result in their increase abality to cause infection and to survive in harsh environment.
these bacteria were send in space in 2006.
one important point is that how these bacteria become more pathogenic? there is no answer uptill now with 100 percent sure, the most probable explaination is
scientis think it's a force called fluid shear.
"Being cultured in microgravity means the force of the liquid passing over the cells is low." The cells "are responding not to microgravity, but indirectly to microgravity in the low fluid shear effects."
"There are areas in the body which are low shear, such as the gastrointestinal tract, where, obviously, salmonella finds itself," she went on. "So, it's clear this is an environment not just relevant to space flight, but to conditions here on Earth, including in the infected host.
