What was the reason for gangrenous colitis?

Patient was shifted to Surgery, where gangrenous colitis was found. He was operated, but later on expired in ITC.

A patient 60 male, presented with 2 day history of several episodes of vomiting and loose watery diarrhea without blood. And for the last 5 hours, he developed irritability and drowsiness. On examination, he was markedly dehydrated with pulse of 120 / minute, temp of 100F and BP of 100/70. There were no signs of Neck stiffness and patient was moving all 4 limbs. Intially he was given 5 Liters IV fluids, and put on Inj. Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. Later on, about 6 hours later, he developed bloody diarrhea and abdominal tenderness. His LP was done and CSF found to be normal. His metabolic profile was also normal. On next day, his abdominal tenderness increased, with guarding and rigidity and no bowel sounds. Suspicion of Peritonitis was made.
