Re: Drug Pricing

I recently visited Pakistan to attend an oncology conference and was particularly interested to find out prices of oncology medications and compare those with what is available outside the country.
If anyone wants, I can provide specific data since our authorities have buried their heads in sand and in response to every construcitve comment say "produce data".
As an example one particular monoclonal antibody used in management of lymphomas is at least double the price of the same drug in the neighbouring countries and middle east. Is there any particular reason for this?
And I can produce multiple other examples at least in the field of oncology.
How is a poor man to get treatment for a fatal disease?

Re: Re: Drug Pricing

Dear Dr(s)
First of all this is helathy sign that you are interacting on the basis of available information and experience. As far as action of drug is concerned there are so many factor who affect the pharmacology like individual biochemical system, Pathology, Drugs quality. Here it is not so easy to say that drug of equall quality proven in analytical lab will prpoduce same result. However this is the only industry of Pakistan where milllions of rupees involve with highly qualified personnel are involve for assurance and monitoring of quality of drugs. The cheap price of any drug does not mean that they are compromising on quality. THis is not only the matter of us. It is the matter if world as well because approx. 01 billion US dollar is required to creat a new molecule. Here time is limited for poor people like us we can contact on phone or visit to each other in the great intrest of nation.

Re: Drug Pricing

I, as a medical specialist, have seen a number of times the failure of locally made drugs. For example, anti-tuberculous drugs which have a great role in treating TB, are marketed as substandard medicines except few ones like Myrin. Although I dont have any data to prove it because we cannot start a case control study comparing Myrin with other ATT, due to ethical issues. It is the role of Govt. which should take feedback from doctors, consultants and test these drugs individually, before their release into the market. It is sad to know that I have seen patients dying of tuberculosis taking drugs for 8-10 months which dont work.

Re: Drug Pricing

Dear Dr Afzal
Quality of drugs can not be evaluated by a physicain on his clinic. You may contact me on phone or directly to share our knowledge in this regards. Keep in mind the ata presented by our physician are usually not acceptable for developed world whereas the data produced by Universities of basic sciences are being involve in hudge contribution of their research in Class one journal of the developed world just because of integrity and design followed by error free advanced techniques.
