Pfizer's Celebrex Should Stay on Market, Panel Says (Update1)
Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex, the world's best-selling prescription arthritis drug, should stay on the U.S. market because its benefits outweigh the risks of heart attacks and strokes, U.S. government advisers ruled today.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel meeting in Gaithersburg, Maryland, voted 31-1 that studies support the continued marketing of Celebrex. Earlier today, the panel of doctors and scientists voted unanimously that the painkiller raises the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Celebrex, which generated $3.3 billion in sales last year, is in the same class of medicines as Merck & Co.'s Vioxx, which was withdrawn last year after a study showed it elevated the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The panel's recommendations later today on the class of pain drugs may lead Merck to resume selling Vioxx, a company official suggested yesterday
