Re: SPSS
You can get an overview of SPSS from different websites listed in PakMediNet "Research Guidelines" section.
Currently, I do not have any information about classes of SPSS in Lahore.

Re: SPSSSPSS is an easy to use package and there are very good books to help.My suggestion is that play with it and you'll be comfortable soon.

SPSS always needed?
Why we need to buy expensive program or need to go to the illegal side of piracy, when several good software package are available for free.
These programs are equally good compared to commercial softwares.
1. Instat-plus-excellent piece of program can be downloaded at http://www.ssc.rdg.ac.uk/software/instat/instat.html
2. Genstat discovery Edition (Free for developing Countries) get it here http://www.discovery.genstat.co.uk/
Do we need commercial or pirated program?

Re: SPSS
Instat-plus is actually a very good program. Although it was developed for statistics related to agriculture, it still can do most of the statistics that I see in Pakistani medical journals. Its interface is also user-friendly (and not very different from SPSS, although closer to MINITAB). It doesn't have capability for advanced statistics, for example, it cannot do calculations for conditional maximum likelihood (which SPSS also can't do except in very restricted circumstances) or multilevel modelling (again, SPSS is not good at it). But I have never seen advanced statistics in Pakistani medical journals and very sparingly in international medical journals. I don't have experience with Genstat, but I can recommend Instat-plus with confidence.
Note: don't get confused by Graphpad's Instat, which is a commercial software. Instat+ can be downloaded from University of Reading's website (link is given above).

Re: Re: SPSS
SPSS is easy to learn as are other windows-based, menu-driven programs. However, statistics programs are a tool, and having a finner tool does not make one an expert. One needs to know underlying principles to draw proper conclusions. Once one learns underlying principles, tools become of secondary importance.
Above two posts were regarding the use of pirated software, and alternatives to SPSS if someone doesn't want to use pirated software. And how much an original SPSS program cost in pakistan?
By the way, why U of Punjab is using SPSS? is it easy to teach? Why not SAS or Stata? Both of these programs are much better than SPSS. Or why not R, S-plus language, or WinBUGS which are excellent for Classical or Bayesian statistics. Or why not some other program that is freely available?

Re: Re: Re: SPSSthanks for the suggestion.it is already under discussion that is why PU has not only offered spss but other programes like stata also.

R for Statistics
Continuing this thread about statistical software, I would like to direct everyone’s attention to a powerful yet flexible, free yet extensively supported, open source statistical software, “R”.
R is an open-source (GPL) statistical environment based on S language. The S language was developed in the late 1980s at AT&T labs. The R project was started by Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka of the Statistics Department of the University of Auckland in 1995. It has quickly gained worldwide attention. It is currently maintained by the R core-development team, a hard-working, international team of volunteer developers. The R project web page
http://www.r-project.org
is the main site for information on R.
R has many advantages. It is free, open source, and can run on Windoz, UNIX, and Mac. R is a very flexible, yet powerful language and environment with excellent graphing capabilities. Moreover, its capabilities can be enhanced by user-written functions. It has an excellent built-in help system along with an international mailing list.
I started learning R when I needed to do meta-regression for meta-analysis. This complicated procedure in SAS or STATA is just a breeze with a function in R (SPSS cannot do it. There is only one macro for meta-regression in SPSS but it cannot use REML for calculation of between-study heterogeneity). And plotting graphs of meta-regressions with 95% confidence intervals was almost impossible in SAS or STATA, while a short syntax was able to generate a nice graph in R. On another occasion, when I needed a program to evaluate and process the output from WinBUGS, only packages written in R were helpful. I would encourage anyone who is interested in some serious statistical analyses to consider using it.

Re: SPSSI suggest to uninstall it first and re-install it. I have installed it on my system and its works fine. After installation, you need add the SSC-SCAT Add-in Module in the Excel.

Re: SPSSThere is a free alternative to SPSS called PSPP. You can find it at http://www.gnu.org/software/pspp It looks exactly like PSPP, but doesn't cost any money.

Re: Re: SPSS
I appreciate the effort by different colleagues on this topic of SPSS but i would also like to hight light the attitude of CPSP in this regards. Recently launch of SPSS version 17 was announed( i am using Version 16) but the last time i attended the CPSP Biostatistic workshop they gave us CD of Version 10.
can somebody ask the CPSP to move in the 21st Century or have they progressed to a better version i wonder
?? somebody please update me on this
regards

Re: Re: Re: SPSSDear Dr. Rathore, what is(are) the difference(s) between version 10 and 16 (or 17)? If one only wants to do t-test, chi-square test, or may be linear or logistic regression, version 10 probably is adequate. Can you please elaborate in which respect version 16 or 17 is superior to version 10?

: Re: SPSS
dear Sir
I agree with you on this But then one may Say why to Use Miscrosoft office 2007 when one can type letters and manuscripts in office 95. i think its the convenience and better ultilities in the new version that are useful e.g the interactive graphs in V16 are much better than V 10 and the use interface is also better.
But my main concern is that Why the only Post Graduate Degree imparting Institute Like CPSP refuses to upgrade to a better version of SPSS while at the same time they have increased the biostatistic workshop fees many folds in the last 10 years

Re: SPSS
DrRathore, the licence of SPSS v16 or v17 is quite expensive, therefore, giving version 10 can be a one reason. 2ndly, v16 has not a good interface and its a failure. Maybe v17 has something better. I suggest you to try ncss.com (not free either) which is much better software than SPSS and also calculates Sample sizes (PASS 2008 module) as well. SPSS v10 is equally effective as far as a general clinician is concerned.
For data entry, I suggest you to use EPIDATA which is available for free.

Re: Re: SPSSConsider using R with RCmdr package. R is free, has capabilities better than any other statistical software, and has wonderful graphics. Without RCmdr package, R is command-line driven (or script-driven) which gives much better control over the software than menu-driven. But for those who like menu-driven (point n' click) RCmdr package (also free) should work just fine.
