PakMediNet Discussion Forum : Medical Research in Pakistan : Request for information and feed back
Dear seniors and Colleagues
Assalam o allaikum
I am currently involved in research and co-authoring a manuscript for an ISPRM position paper on the current /future role of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) in the management of major (spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, long bone fractures etc) and minor disabilities (e.g. musculoskeletal trauma) arising from natural disasters. The ISPRM (International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine) http://www.isprm.org/ is an international medical rehabilitation organization with an interest in evaluating and expanding the role of medical rehabilitation in disaster management. Although PMR has historically not become actively engaged in medical rehabilitation of injuries until 24-48 hours post-event, emergence of the discipline of ‘disaster rehabilitation’ advances PMR into the emergency response phase.
I believe many of my seniors and colleagues on this forum have a first hand experience of dealing with natural disaster scenarios (earthquakes and floods). Therefore I would request them to please share their experiences, knowledge and give me their opinions and feedback which can be integrated in the final manuscript. All responders would be acknowledged.
These are some open ended questions and brief n focused responses will be appreciated.
1. Do you think that PMR has any role to play in the acute/post disaster phase?
2. If you answered YES. Please elaborate on the following
a. Based on your experience, do you recommend that pre- disaster planning should involve input from PMR? If NO, please explain.
b. In which phase of the disaster response, rehabilitation intervention would be most appropriate. Acute or post acute. Or Both
c. Which are the conditions /injuries, best served by involving health care professionals from the field of PMR?
d. Would you be comfortable if only physiotherapists are available instead of rehab specialists or a dedicated rehab team?
