Call for collaborative research on Stroke
Dear All
Assalam o allaikum
I am Dr Farooq Rathore, currently working as a graded specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine at the AF Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Rawalpindi. I would like to propose a collaborative research project on Stroke. I am proposing a multi center (read Teaching Hospitals ) study on the epidemiological pattern of Stroke in Pakistani Population. I agree that it may sound like reinventing the wheel to many of my senior colleagues but a review of national and international medical literature shows that there is not much available on the epidemiological pattern of stroke in Pakistan. The studies available are usually a single center experience of 100 or 200 cases and there are questions about the study designs as well
I am interested in Medical specialists, Neurologists and residents in Medicine who can spare some time on this research project. It would require 5-7 minutes only to fill in the proforma and based on my correspondence with some colleagues abroad , it stands a chance to be published in international medical journal, provided that we have a large enough sample, meticulous data collection and adequate data analysis.
Details will be furnished to those who are interested
Please write to me at researchnwrite@gmail.com with collaborative research in the subject heading
PS; I would like to start data collection on 1st May so please send in your mail before 20 th April
UPDATE OF 26 th March
...The things have already started rolling and i would like to make some clarifications for the general info of all
1. This is a study on stroke in Pakistani Population ONLY and only colleagues who are based and working in Pakistan should contact. This leaves out the colleagues who are interested in the research project but are not present in Pakistan at present.
2. In the first phase we are concentrating on epidemiological features, risk factors, identification of reasons for delay in seeking medical help, modes of presentation and radiological findings only..... we are not collecting other parameters like frequency of complications, psychiatric morbidity or the functional outcomes etc
3. This is NOT a FCPS part II dissertation for which one can sit in his room in spare time and cook up data (I have seen seniors and colleagues doing this with my own eyes----so please don't argue)...This is a serious research project and would require serious and honest approach towards data collection.....Only colleagues who can spare time in data collection and have previous experience of research would be the best candidates for this project.
4. We are hoping and expecting that at least one Major teaching hospital from every provinces of Pakistan is involved in the data collection.
5. Since this would be the next best thing to a population based study so our first/ Ideal choice would be a
· Major Teaching Hospital preferably with a neurology ward
· Represented by a colleague having interest and experience of genuine research
· Willing to attend the collaborative meeting for setting the final parameters in Rawalpindi ( Most probably in last week of April)
Regards
Dr Farooq

Re: Call for collaborative research on Stroke
PIMS has fairly good number of stroke patients and large file data base . If I recall well its head is still Dr.Tariq and most patients are in ward no:4 .
Its record with CT MRI go several years back , may be you should contact some PG there .
Mostly hypertensives , diabetics , smokers and unfortunate etiology less ones .

Re: Call for collaborative research on Stroke
I think you can contact Dr. Akhtar Sherin at asli_71@yahoo.com. He is a Neurologist in Kohat Hospital and a best person to contact.
