Calculating odds
Dear fellows.
if out of 3800 college basket ball students 2400, get promoted to professional level, what will be odds in favour of such promotion. Authors have reported 12:7 but didn't shed light on method of calculation. I hv been trying hard to figure out but mess up every thing. please if somebody can tell how could have this problem been solved by authors.

Re: Calculating odds
it is straight forward.
total number of students = 3800
promoted to professional level = 2400
not promoted = 3800-2400 = 1400
odds = 2400:1400 or 12:7

Re: Calculating odds
Thanx sir, although i reached that conclusion rather differently but yours is much simpler and straight.
I divided it 2400 with 3800 and got 0.631. Which was 63 out of 100 and simplifying it gave me 12/7 which can even be further worked out.I don't know really that did i reach rome via wrong road but i reached any way at least to console my self. do comment
Sir i am really reading and working hard to make some head or tail of this subject which is essentially unknown at both under and post graduate level in pakistan. So it means i 'll have to work untutored. Pl dont mind if in future ,i continue to ask even more basic and straightforward questions. My maths is extremely grotesque and that was one reason for my joining medicine. so wait for more to come , even more idiotic. Will you?
