A total of 129 patients were admitted to the medical ICU through the emergency department over a period of three months. Out of these, 30 patients (23.25%) were suffering from chronic liver disease and its complications. Twenty patients (66.67%) had Hepatitis C, 2 patients (6.67%) had Hepatitis B, and in 8 patients (26.66%) no etiology of chronic liver disease (CLD) could be detected. There were a total of 23 deaths (17.8%). Twelve (52.17%) patients had underlying chronic liver disease and died because of one of its complications. It was concluded that chronic liver disease is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICU and associated death rate is the highest.
