Spectrum and bacterial isolates in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in Khuzdar.
Pak J Otolaryngol Jan ;22(2):34-6.

Objective: To find out the common micro organisms in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and their sensitivity. DESIGN: Descriptive study. DURATION AND PLACE OF STUDY: This study was carried out from February 2005 to August 2005 at the department of Otorhinolaryngology, Combined Military Hospital, Khuzdar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total 122 patients with unilateral or bilateral active chronic suppurative otitis media from the outpatient clinic were included in the study. All patients were evaluated through detailed history and thorough clinical examination. Pus samples were collected from the discharging ear(s) and sent to pathological laboratory of the hospital where culture sensitivity studies and antibiotic sensitivity were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 140 samples were studied microbiologically among them 121(86.42%) were pure cultures and 15(10.71%) were mixed while 4(2.85%) yielded no growth. Among the pure cultures pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common isolate 61(50.41%), followed by staphyloco ccus aureus 38(31.40%). Other isolates were proteus 8(6.61%) E. coli 5(4.13%), klebsiella 4(3.31%), anaerobes 3(2.48%) aspergillus 1(0.83%) and candida 1(0.83%). Drug sensitivity pattern of pseudomonas aeruginosa showed that imepenem was active against majority 98.36% of isolates followed by ciprofloxacin 96.72%, ceftriaxone 96.72%, cefizox 95.08%, ofloxacin 95.08%, amikacin 93.44%, gentamicin 67.21%, tobramycin 65.57% and co-amoxiclave 52.45%. Staphylococcus aureus isolates were resistant to ampicillin in 82.44% and amoxicillin in 78.95% where as majority was sensitive to imepenem 97.36%, ofloxacin 94.73%, amikacin 92.3%, ciprofloxacin 92.1% and coamoxiclave 84.21%. CONCLUSION: Commonest organism isolated from chronic discharging ears was pseudomonas aeruginosa and staphylococcus aureus and majority of them are sensitive to imepenem, ciprofloxacin ofloxacin and amikacin.
