Emotional and behavioral difficulties among children who lost their parents in a natural disaster: a pilot study.

Children were selected from the Boys and Girls School located in Nara (Balakot). All of the Children came from the same social, economic, cultural and religious background. All of the them were affected more or less in a same way by the earthquake. A validated URDU version of Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used. A total of 20 Children were screened using the research version of Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. Among the participants 13 were girls and 7 were boys recruited from local schools. The scores for overall stress accounted to be very high in 55% of the children, followed by a high score in 25% of the cases. 70% of children scored very high for emotional distress within six months of the earthquake. 45% of the children were known to have changes in their behaviour or having behavioural difficulties since the earthquake. Difficulties in getting along with other children was slightly raised. The impact of any difficulties on child life after the earthquake was reported to very high in 65% of the cases.
