Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;47(2):33-6.

203 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) were studied to evaluate, on comparative basis, the efficacy of pentavalent antimonial compound (meglumine antimoniate) and dapsone. The criteria for inducting patients into the study included demonstration of LT bodies in the skin slit smears/skin biopsies or the presence of promastigotes in cultures (modified Tobie's medium). These patients were randomly allocated to groups. Group I (62 patients 1 was treated with intramuscular injections of meglumine antimoniate in a dose of 15mg of Sb/kg/day for 14 days. Group II (62 patients) was treated with intralesional injection of the same drug in a dose of 1 ml (85mg of Sb) in each lesion on alternate days for 14 days. Group III (62 Patients) was given oral dapsone in a dose of 100mg/day for 4 weeks. Group IV 117 patients 1 was kept as control in which no treatment was given. The patients were evaluated at day 28 and then at 6 months after completion of treatment. The overall cure rate in group I was 85.4%, in group II 67.7%, in group 11 56.5% while spontaneous healing in group IV was recorded in 35.35% cases.
