Professional Med J Jan ;13(4):710-5.

Objectives: To compared the outcome of open anterior pre-peritoneal mesh hernioplasty and Liechtenstein tension free repair of inguinal hernia. Design: Prospective study . Setting: CMH Hyderabad. Period: From 1st March 2004 to 1st March 2006. Materials & Methods: A total of 88 male patients aged (20-75) with uncomplicated inguinal hernias were randomized into two groups. Results: Group I (n=44) underwent open pre-peritoneal mesh hernioplasty (anterior open through the defect approach) while Group II (n=44) underwent Liechtenstein tension free repair. Patients of Group I & II had comparable mean operation time (40 min). Group I patients had smaller surgical incision average size (4cm), shorter mean hospital stay (1.8 days), earlier return to light work (10 days), low rate of post-operative complications, (2.27%). Conclusions: We conclude that open pre-peritoneal mesh hernioplasty is superior technique than Liechtenstein tension free repair.
