Alvarado scoring system for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis — How much reliable?.

Objective: To study the reliability of Alvarado scoring system for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and to find out what are the most suggestive symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis. Study Design and Method: Descriptive cross sectional study done in Surgical Unit II, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore. Hundred patients were admitted through emergency department with the complaint of pain in right iliac fossa, irrespective of age and gender. Each patient was awarded a score based on Alvarado Scoring System. Appendicectomy was carried out in patients having a score seven or greater than seven and appendix was subjected for histopathology analysis for the confirmation of diagnosis with a reasonable accuracy. Results: Results showed that patients having a score more than seven have acutely inflamed appendix.
