Pak Paed J Jan ;31(4):206-14.

This review article summarizes the results of papers published in various journals relating to bacterial neonatal sepsis in the developing world. The effort has been made to highlight areas relating to prevalence of organisms in different regions, predisposing factors, culture positivity, antibiotic sensitivity and mortality. The information for review was gathered by searching multiple data-bases. The websites used were Medline, My Athens, WHO, Save the Children, World Bank, UNICEF and Google. The keywords used were neonatal, sepsis, septicaemia, developing world and names of individual countries. The articles or their abstracts in English language or those translated in English were included in the review. Manual search of the recent journals of Archives of disease in Childhood, Lancet and British Medical Journal and Journal of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan was also carried out. A total of about 150 articles were selected for review. Only those 153 countries were included that were mentioned in the list of developing countries, as defined by the World Bank. Their division into six regions was followed for the purpose of review also. This list was obtained from the website of the World Bank www.worldbank.org/data/countryclass/classgroups.htm. The data derived from those articles was not further statistically analysed.
