Slide positivity rate of malarial parasite at Z A Bhutto laboratory Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana.
Int J Pathol Jan ;5(2):89-91.

Objective: To study the slide positivity rate and to evaluate the status of malarial parasite species. Design & Duration: A retrospective study, from January 2003 to December 2005. Setting: Z.A Bhutto Laboratory Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana. Patients & Methods: During the study period a total of 5499 blood samples were collected form the patients for malarial parasite test. Thick and thin blood smear slides were prepared from the patients blood. After drying, the slides were stained with Leishman’s stain. Finally, the stained slides were examined with microscope under oil immersion lens. Results: All 5495 blood smear slides were carefully examined and 802 were found positive for Malarial Parasite with 14.5% overall slide positivity rate. Out of 802 malarial parasite slides, 726 (90.6%) were of Plasmodium falciparym and 76 (09.4%) were of Plasmodium vivax. Conclusion: Despite the availability of non-microscopic immunochromatographic tests, carefully examined blood smear slides are still a good tool for the diagnosis of malaria.
